Nursery Inspiration for Your Growing Family
January 31, 2022No matter how many baby nursery ideas you dream up, putting the pieces together can be daunting. If you aren’t sure where to start, this bright and stylish room makeover may just be the simple nursery inspiration you need to create something special in your home.
Comfort, calm, and functionality are equally important when planning a space for a new member of the family. Designing a cheerful room that brings you joy can make your nursery feel like a home within a home. So, if you have a vacant room and are planning for a little one, let this post provide you with the perfect nursery color, paint, and design ideas to complement your home.
Creating a charming nursery doesn’t have to be hard. This room makeover showcases a simple, neutral design, focusing on light and comfort. With ample sunlight pouring in from the windows during the day, white walls create a warm and tranquil environment for you and your little one.
To transform this room’s walls from a bold green to a soft, clean white, we started with KILZ 3® Premium Interior and Exterior Primer. This primer is fast-drying, low odor, and has excellent adhesion, making it a great base for our chosen color of paint. Because of its thicker high hiding formula, it’s ideal for smoothing out surface imperfections and covering up any stains that may have accumulated in an old or previously occupied room. It’s also perfect for masking any existing color when switching from dark to light.
After thoroughly priming our walls and allowing for sufficient drying time, it was time to paint. We chose a lovely, muted white paint that makes for a clean and sophisticated backdrop for decor, as well as a peaceful environment for this nursery. With our newly blank canvas, we began the process of creating a cozy and welcoming interior. This transformation used BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Interior Paint in the color Wind’s Breath (GR-W06).
To achieve our look, we played with classic simplicity. Light shades of exposed wood make the white painted crib, lamp, and picture frame pop, soft grays accent the blankets and pillows, a dark end table and shelving unit provide focal points for the eyes, and a bright white chair complements the other pieces while evoking a modern cottage feel.
The dark-wood floor and large white area rug serve as an anchor, and the luminous curtains bring movement into the space by reflecting the natural light from outside. This beautifully simple nursery is both elegant and inviting, while remaining an attractive, neutrally- styled room that can easily serve another purpose once your child outgrows it.

5 Things Primer Does for Your Paint Job
January 19, 2021Primer and paint belong together. A match made in design-heaven, primer helps paint to be the best it can be and is key to getting professional quality results. Read on below to learn five things primer does for your paint job and get inspiration for your next painting project.
Primer Makes Your Paint Job Durable
Over time, fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels can make paint peel. For spaces where this is normal like kitchens, using KILZ 3® Premium Primer (known for its exceptional adhesion and durability) before you paint can help ensure your paint job lasts longer. See the full kitchen transformation with step-by-step instructions here.
Primer Seals and Blocks Stains
If you have a wall with unpleasant stains, for example smoke stains from a previous homeowner in a bedroom, KILZ® Original Primer with its powerful stain blocking formula is the one for the job. See how we freshened up a mid-century modern bedroom with primer here.
Versatile Multi-Surface Sealer
When you want to paint a porous surface like brick, you want a primer that seals the surface. KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer is a versatile multi-surface sealer perfect for the task. See how a freshly primed and painted fireplace pops against on-trend navy walls in this post.
Primer Hides Dark Colors
When you’re applying a new paint color, the last thing you need is your old color seeping through. That’s why KILZ 3® Premium Primer is a great primer choice when going from a darker color to a lighter color. It hides dark colors and creates the perfect base for your new topcoat paint. See how KILZ primer turned a dark spare room into a sunny and sweet nursery here.
Primer Has a Mildew Resistant Primer Finish
In high humidity areas, like bathrooms, KILZ® Kitchen & Bath Primer is up to the task. It dries with a mildew resistant primer finish that helps protect and support paint. See the full bathroom transformation here.

Color Blocking for a Sweet Nursery
January 19, 2021A neglected and dark spare room is transformed into a sunny and sweet nursery with the help of KILZ® Primer and paint. The existing deep berry-hued walls wouldn’t do for the light and bright look desired for the space, calling for KILZ 3® Premium. Formulated with a thicker high hiding formula, KILZ 3 Premium hides surface imperfections, prepares the surface better for painting and hides previous dark colors with ease.
After primer is properly applied and allowed to dry it’s time for some fun color blocking in a fresh white and happy orange hue. KILZ Tribute® in Architectural White TB-08 is used for the top half of the wall, while the same paint in Bright Marigold TB-95 brightens up the bottom. KILZ Tribute provides a durable, highly scrubbable finish, making for easy-to-clean walls ideal for children’s rooms.
Primer and paint take the room from dim to delightful, and now it’s time to decorate! A hanging chair creates a relaxing space for rocking and reading, while a sweet white crib pops against the orange paint color and ties to the white hue on the upper wall. Fanciful artwork and a colorful mobile complement the color-blocking and create a fun focal point.
In need of your own nursery makeover? Read on below for step-by-step instructions!
Step 1:
Wipe down walls with a damp cloth to ensure they are clean and free of dust. Allow to dry.
Step 2:
Tape around the baseboards and moldings with painter’s tape to ensure you don’t get primer or paint where you don’t want it!
Step 3:
To block the old dark paint color, apply 1 coat of KILZ 3® Premium (stirring thoroughly before and occasionally during use) to the walls and allow to dry. Apply primer using a brush first to “cut in” around the edges, then use a roller to fill in.
Step 4:
Once primer is dry, it’s time to tape off the color black pattern. Mark the wall where you want the top lighter color and darker bottom color to hit. Using a level and a pencil, draw a thin line to guide you. Next, apply painter’s tape to the line.
Step 5:
Starting with the lighter color for the top half of the wall (in this case KILZ Tribute® in Architectural White), apply using the same application method as the primer (using a brush first to cut in around the edges 4 to 6 feet at a time, then use a roller to fill in those sections before moving along). Remove the tape before the paint is fully dry.
Step 6:
Once the paint is dry, reapply the tape so the bottom edge is even with where the Architectural White paint ended (essentially making sure the darker bottom color meets exactly where the lighter color stopped!). Then apply KILZ Tribute® in Bright Marigold to the bottom half of the wall using the same application method as before (using a brush first to cut in around the edges 4 to 6 feet at a time, then use a roller to fill in those sections before moving along).
Step 7:
Remove the painter’s tape before the orange paint is fully dry, and you’re done!

Nursery Makeover with a Sweet Striped Accent Wall
December 20, 2019Are you or someone you love expecting? Creating a cute-as-can-be nursery doesn’t have to be a challenge, and with tips from KILZ® you can color the space any way you choose! In this new nursery, soft colors are painted in a sweet striped pattern to create a playful accent wall. The colors pop because the wall was primed before it was painted! Want to recreate the look for yourself? This painting project is simple to do at home.
When painting a porous surface like new drywall, KILZ® 1 Standard Primer is recommended. Designed for use on multiple interior surfaces, KILZ® 1 Standard Primer seals porous surfaces and promotes a more uniform appearance of the topcoat. To begin, wipe down the accent wall with a damp cloth to ensure it is clean and free of dust and allow the surface to dry. Next, apply KILZ® 1 Standard Primer to seal the porous surface of the new drywall. Apply primer using a brush first to “cut in” around edges, then use a roller to fill in. Allow 1-hour dry time.
Now it’s time for paint! Selecting the lightest of the three paint colors as the base, apply KILZ Tribute® in Flying Dove to the entire accent wall. Use a brush first to cut in around edges 4 to 6 feet at a time, then use a roller to fill in those sections before moving along. Allow 1-hour dry time. Next up, painting the striped pattern! Measure the height of the wall and divide by the desired number of stripes to determine the width of each stripe. Use a measuring tape, pencil and level, mark the placement of each stripe, then apply painter’s tape to each line (ensuring the tape is on the correct side of the line so the stripes are even). Using a roller, paint every third stripe in BEHR Premium Plus® in Calla. Repeat the above steps to paint every other remaining stripe in Misty Morning. Remove the painter’s tape (pulling off at an angle) before the paint has fully dried to ensure clean lines.
To finish up the sweet space, we primed and painted a plain wood rocking chair in the same light blue shade used for the striped accent wall – KILZ Tribute® in Misty Morning. It really ties the nursery together! When painting wood furniture, it is advised to always use primer first. Primer will help protect the wood and will ensure better adhesion and truer color from your paint. For this chair refresh we used KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer, a great choice for furniture upcycling projects. To learn how to paint a chair of your own, keep reading below!
Step 1:
Remove chair cushion and set aside.
Step 2:
Sand the entire surface of the chair; do a first pass with 100-150 grit sandpaper then finish with a second pass of 180-220 grit sandpaper.
Step 3:
After sanding, wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust or residue and allow the surface to dry before moving on to primer.
Step 4:
Apply KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer, moving in the same direction as the wood grain for best results. Allow primer to dry for 1 hour.
Step 5:
Next it’s time for paint! Apply KILZ Tribute® in Misty Morning using a nylon or polyester blend brush, moving in smooth strokes that go the same direction as the wood grain.
