Custom Built-Ins Completed with KILZ®
August 28, 2024Hi, I’m Mark The Builder! I am a woodworker, husband, father, and so much more. I enjoy creating projects and delivering beautiful carpentry to my clients and also for my own home. As a woodworking enthusiast, I take great satisfaction in crafting built-in structures. After purchasing our home, my wife and I planned a remodel to better fit our needs. We recently started renovating our formal dining room into an office, including a T-shaped desk that will serve as two L-shaped working areas for my wife and me. After finishing the first phase of the office built-in, we realized we had enough material to also complete a built-in for the mudroom area within the office. This addition provides extra storage and a designated area for our children to hang their backpacks, with drawers to put additional school supplies, shoes, toys, and more. There is also a wall plug that can serve as a charging station for our oldest son’s school Chromebook. As with previous built-ins projects, I used KILZ RESTORATION® Primer as a base before painting and KILZ® PREMIUM SEAL to ensure a flawless finish along the seams.
My wife and I chose BEHR® Sage Green ICC-77 with gold finishings to match our office built-in. And to top it off, no pun intended, we picked a white oak wood with a smoke stain finish, which perfectly matches the Sage Green paint and the desk tops. Our vision for the office is a sleek, modern feel. We plan to remove the arch in the walkway to install glass doors at the entrance of the office and close up the opening that leads to our kitchen.
In the garage, I set up my indoor painting area with stands and a drop cloth underneath. This is where I sanded and used KILZ RESTORATION® Primer on the upper and lower cabinetry, as well as on the doors. I applied two coats of primer using a paint sprayer for a smooth and even finish. After completing the cabinetry, I sanded and primed the slats for the mudroom built-in accent wall. I like to prime, sand, prime again, and sand the slats for a smooth foundation. Once the primer dried, with the help of the wind and my fans, I applied one coat of BEHR Sage Green, achieving a smooth, beautiful, and flawless finish. Then, it was time to put it all together in the office!
I installed the base by cutting the trim around the baseboard to fit it perfectly, making it look as though it was built into the house. I secured it with a wooden anchor behind the base, attaching it to the wall. After securing it, I added the oak wood top to create a bench for the kids to sit while putting on their shoes. Next, I assembled the accent wall and smoothed out the seams using the KILZ® PREMIUM SEAL before adding a coat of paint. Then, it was time to install the upper cabinetry before installing gold hooks.
I really enjoyed using KILZ RESTORATION® Primer as it is a versatile water-based primer, sealer, and stain blocker. It effectively tackles tough stains like heavy water damage, smoke, grease, crayons, pencil, and pet stains while sealing persistent odors. It can be used on interior surfaces including woodwork, plaster, brick, ceramic tile, and glass. The KILZ® PREMIUM SEAL was the perfect finishing touch to add to the pre-painting process as it offers great durability and stretch, even capable of sealing active leaks.
Overall, I’m happy we added this new addition to the office, which also provides an organized space for our kids to place their things. It blends perfectly with the rest of the space, and I couldn’t have done it without KILZ. I can’t wait until the rest of the office is complete!

April 2, 2024Getting started
DIY’ers know that when it comes to home restoration and remodeling, shortcuts can’t be taken. Perfect painting requires the perfect primer to solve the multitude of problems that any surface presents. Ensuring you have the right foundation with a quality primer like KILZ® can set you up for success. This guide simplifies the selection process for primers that best fits your project and outlines the essential tools for application.
Why Prime?
Primer ensures your paint adheres to the surface properly, making it last longer. It achieves even color and full coverage with fewer coats, prevents old stains and colors from bleeding through, and adds a protective layer, which is vital for exterior projects.
The first step in any project is making a Painting Checklist of all the tasks you’ll need to take on. Know your surfaces and space. Whether you’re priming to paint outdoors or indoors, on wood, glass, metal or drywall, each scenario requires a specialized primer and process.

Required Tools And Preparation
Preparing your surface is an important step before applying primer, never prime over a dirty surface, clean your surface as best you can before you apply primer.
Here’s what you’ll need for primer application:
• Brushes: High-quality brushes are essential for cutting in around edges and in tight spaces. A 2-3 inch angled brush is versatile for most projects.
• Rollers: For larger surfaces, a roller can make the application quicker and more efficient. Use a roller with the appropriate nap length for your surface; smoother surfaces require a shorter nap.
• Paint Tray: Essential for holding primer and rolling out excess before application.
• Sandpaper: After the primer dries, you might need fine-grit sandpaper (around 220 grit) for smoothing out any bumps or imperfections.
• Drop Cloths: Protect your floors and furniture from drips and spills.
• Painter’s Tape: Use this to mask off areas you don’t want primed, such as trim or windows.
Applying Primer
Follow these 4 steps for proper primer application:
1. Surface Prep: Clean and sand your surface as needed to ensure it is smooth and ready for primer.
2. Apply Primer: With your chosen tools, apply the primer in even, controlled strokes or rolls, following the specific directions for your Kilz product.
3. Inspect and Sand: After drying, check for drips or rough spots, sanding lightly if necessary.
4. Paint Application: Once the primer is dry, proceed with painting, enjoying the smooth base your primer has created.
Your Surface Is Now Ready For Paint
Selecting the right KILZ® primer and using the proper tools for application can dramatically affect the quality and longevity of your project. Whether tackling a small piece of furniture or an entire room, starting with a solid foundation will ensure a professional-looking finish that lasts. Dive into your project with confidence, knowing you’re equipped with the best products and tools for the job.

Project Spotlight: A Bathroom Remodel With KILZ® Primers – Part 1
November 20, 2023We are Jamie and Morgan Molitor, a dynamic duo in both life and business, and the driving force behind our journey in home remodeling, interior styling, and the world of small media. Since 2012, we’ve been all about keeping it real.
What started as a lifestyle blog has since blossomed into c2s, a thriving design and build business combined with a small media enterprise. With over a decade of experience, we’ve mastered the art of transforming houses and crafting spaces filled with joy, not only for our clients but for ourselves as well. We’re here to take you on a journey through every step, from design and construction processes to the intricacies of digital marketing.
Our most recent bathroom design and remodel project is in Wayzata, MN for the fabulous Chris Freytag, a local health and fitness expert, blogger, author, and popular keynote speaker here in the Twin Cities.
At our core, we have a genuine passion for remodeling primary bathrooms, and there’s a unique excitement when we embark on a total transformation while preserving the existing layout. It’s like unlocking the hidden potential within the familiar confines. Each year, we take on approximately 10 bathroom projects that follow this transformative approach, where we breathe new life into the space without altering its fundamental structure. There’s an art to retaining the essence of the layout while infusing it with modern elegance and functionality. It’s about enhancing the existing beauty, ensuring that every corner reflects the homeowner’s vision, and delivering a space that feels both rejuvenating and utterly luxurious. These projects allow us to showcase our expertise and creativity, creating bathrooms that are not just functional but also awe-inspiring havens within the home.
And one of the best ways to do this is through paint! The KILZ® brand is one of c2s’ go-to brands, especially for bathroom remodels. In high-humidity areas, such as bathrooms, finding the right primer that can withstand moisture is crucial. That’s where KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer truly shines. Specially designed for these challenging environments, it forms a protective barrier that not only prevents mildew growth but also supports the paint, ensuring it thrives in its best condition. With KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer, you can confidently transform your spaces, knowing that your paint will stand strong against the challenges of high humidity, allowing your home to look its best for years to come. Say goodbye to worries and hello to enduring, vibrant walls!
THE PROJECT
At first, Chris and her husband aimed for a cosmetic refresh since the space’s layout was already well-designed. Removing the jetted tub was a priority, and the only structural change involved expanding the shower entrance. Everything, except the cabinetry, underwent a transformation — from paint and countertops to tiles and fixtures. A complete makeover to match their vision! The whole goal of this project was to say goodbye to the beige and hello to white, white, white. A light and bright bathroom makeover!
A classic bathroom remodel is like a timeless makeover that keeps things stylish and comfy. It’s all about simple lines, cool fixtures, and a calming color scheme that makes your bathroom a chill space to be in. Think subway tiles, vintage tubs, and those shiny chrome fixtures you love. Classic bathrooms never go out of style and give you a space that’s not just pretty but also super practical. Whether it’s the retro vibes of black and white or the cozy feel of wood accents, classic bathroom makeovers keep things cool and comfy for years to come.
This project has been smooth sailing. Painting is underway, plumbing up next – and this project will be a wrap! Can’t wait to share the final reveal with you all soon. But today – we wanted to chat about priming and painting! Especially the importance of primer, something that is so often overlooked. We see so often those buying the cheapest primer or even worse, not priming at all. Once you get done reading this blog post – we hope you will never be that person.
Importance of Primer
Priming is like the secret sauce for a successful paint job. It’s the difference between just getting it done and getting it done perfectly, ready for Instagram-worthy photos. Taking the time to prime is a smart move that can save you time and money down the road. With KILZ® Primers, you can achieve long-lasting results that you can show off with confidence. These go-to products always deliver the dependable and consistent performance you need.

For this exciting video series, we enlisted the help of two paint, construction, and design experts to make over individual rooms in a single-family home. With their help, we refreshed and modernized four outdated rooms, saving time and money in the process, and extending the life of this charming residence.
Let’s recap our favorite moments from Destination Restoration and get excited to tackle another year of home improvement.

The power of KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer did wonders for this open-concept living/dining room, where it helped to completely restore an old fireplace and brighten up the room. Rather than put the home through an expensive and time-consuming remodel, our pros reimagined the space and rejuvenated it for years to come with a few simple changes. DIY living room inspiration at its peak, this is a great example of how you can breathe new life into an older home while sticking to a budget.

We finish our look back at the series with the primary bedroom remodel. This room’s biggest issue was that it had a large ceiling stain from water damage. Our pros didn’t let this stop them, and instead, used KILZ RESTORATION® Interior Primer to cover and seal the stain and a beautiful terracotta color paint to transform this room into a warm and luxurious space. To finish the look, they upgraded the old closet with a custom, built-in storage unit with a hidden TV display, painted in a complimentary forest green. We couldn’t be more pleased with the result, which reminds us of a chic and cozy desert retreat.
Note: The cause of the water damage had been remedied prior to our pros coming in to fix the cosmetic side.

Primer Myths – 5 Common Myths About Primer
October 3, 2023If you’re new to DIY home improvement, there can be a lot to learn, which is why we’re here to help. We talk a lot about all the things primer can do—how it can improve your paint results, save you time and money, cover up stains, and block irritants like odors, mold, and mildew—but we don’t always discuss the many misconceptions about primer that prevent people from using it. So, today we’re going to address some common primer misconceptions, so you can feel confident you’re making the right choice for your next project.
Myth#1: Primer is Just Paint Without Color
This is one of the most common misconceptions, but the fact of the matter is, primer and paint are two completely different formulas. Paint is formulated to deliver color, and primer’s purpose is to adhere to the surface, create a clean and smooth foundation, protect the surface, and in some cases block stains or hide other imperfections.
Myth #2: Primer Doesn’t Make a Difference and It Takes Too Much Time
Applying primer will actually save you time and money in the long run. Depending on the condition and problem areas that exist on your surface, it’s smart to spend the extra step priming. Using primer to address a problem before applying paint may prevent the need to re-paint or add additional coats of paint to get the results you want.
Myth #3: I Should Use Multiple Coats of Primer if I Can Still See a Stain or Previous Color
Not necessarily. If the previous color or stain is severe, you may need to apply more than one coat of primer, however, it’s not necessary to keep applying coats until a stain or previous color disappears. If the primer is applied uniformly over the previous color or stain, then one or two coats should be sufficient.
Primer works underneath a coat of paint to give you a uniform surface, hide robust colors, block stains, and enhance the paint’s ability to stick to the surface better and last longer. But even if the primer coat does not fully hide the stain or former paint, it will still perform these functions. With help from primer, a coat of paint should completely cover the surface — including previous paint or stains — and get you the results you want.
Myth #4: You Only Need to Prime Indoors, Not Outdoors
Priming outside is just as important, as priming inside because exterior surfaces are exposed to the elements and can experience expansion and contraction (from heat and cold), as well as UV exposure that may cause your paint application to fail due to lack of adhesion to the surface. For these reasons, using an exterior primer first on a properly prepared surface can make a huge difference. If you want to protect your painted outdoor surfaces from cracks, peels, and blisters, and ensure your paint lasts longer, using a primer formulated for these circumstances is a must.
Myth #5: You Don’t Need to Use Primer If Your Paint Contains Primer
Most paints do not contain primer, and if they do—such as an ‘all-in-one’ product—most pros and experienced DIYers will tell you to apply an external coat or two anyway to cover yourself. The only time you should use a combination paint and primer is if you’re touching up paint of the same color. For all other jobs, whether you’re changing the color, starting from scratch, or refreshing a surface, priming before you apply paint is always going to give you superior results.
We hope this information helps you with your next paint project. Be sure to come back to the blog for more tips like these and to get all your primer and paint questions answered beforehand to save you time and money.

From Stained to Stunning: Restoring a Primary Bedroom
April 17, 2023On this episode of Destination Restoration, we show you how to restore a room that’s suffered a bit of damage. Older generational homes can accumulate imperfections over time, especially stains from things like water damage. In the case of today’s refresh, not only do we take a standard primary bedroom and update it for a new era, but we also tackle how to restore unsightly, odorous stains using primer and a fresh coat of paint.
This series demonstrates how you can breathe new life into an older home (in this case, a 4th generation family home), while keeping its structural integrity intact.
Once again, our fabulous design duo—Jason Lai (interior designer) and Jared Foster (contractor/pro painter) —found a way to update this modest room while addressing the large yellow stain that had leaked its way around the sliding glass door. Our goal was to both cover it up and ensure it wouldn’t show through, which we achieved with a thorough coat of primer and a new coat of paint. Due to the lack of storage in the room, we also wanted to install a custom unit, with ample cabinets to make the space more functional and a modern haven for the parents of this lovely family home.
Covering up stains takes a little extra effort but is totally doable with the right tools. Make sure you choose a sturdy primer that’s right for the job, like KILZ RESTORATION® Interior Primer when tackling a similar project of your own, and follow along to see how our pros approached this room makeover. We’ve also included a step-by-step guide on how to paint over water stains using primer.
Stain Coverage
The main goal of this room refresh was to remove any trace of the water stain and get rid of its foul odor at the same time. To do this, we primed over the water stain using KILZ RESTORATION® Interior Primer then painted the walls, ceiling, and molding with Rio Rust, a color by Behr Paint.
Extra Storage
To replace the lackluster closet, we added a custom, built-in closet system with a hidden TV display, perfect for unwinding after a long day. We primed the unit, and then painted it with Forest Edge, a color by Behr Paint, for its ability to stand out and complement the color of the rest of the room. Together, these colors elevated the room and gave it a warm, modern, and cozy feel.
Other Changes
We wanted to update the existing lighting to complement the new design and bring more warmth to the space, so we added a modern chandelier by Kichler Lighting, as well as additional recessed lighting fixtures on the ceiling. We also replaced the door hardware, updated the electrical throughout, and added carefully chosen décor to bring this refined boho-chic look together.
Why Do You Need to Prime?
Priming is essential for proper surface preparation for any paint project. It’s the difference between a job done and a job done right. Priming helps solve a wide range of problems, including highly porous surfaces, stains, odors, uneven surfaces, texture differences, and adhesion problems.
Because this room required stain coverage we used, KILZ RESTORATION® Interior Primer for its superior, water-based sealing and stain blocking formula. It can tackle tough stains from heavy water damage, rust, smoke, nicotine, grease, tannin, ink, pencil, felt marker, pet stains and more. It’s also a champion odor blocker and can be used on many interior surfaces including drywall, woodwork, plaster, masonry, brick, painted metal, ceramic tile, glass, and most other glossy surfaces.
Step-By-Step Guide to Stain Blocking and Priming Walls:
Painting over water stains requires a few basic steps from start to finish. Here’s an easy guide to follow for your next project:
1. Patch any holes from damage and sand smooth to prep the surface (if needed)
2.Thoroughly clean your surfaces with a damp cloth to ensure they are clean and free of dust. Allow to dry.
3. Tape around the baseboards, trim and moldings.
4. Protect your floors and furniture from paint and primer by covering it with a drop cloth or plastic sheets.
5. For major stains like water, grease, or smoke, select a heavy-duty stain blocker like KILZ RESTORATION® Interior Primer.
6. Now it’s time to prime! Using a brush first to “cut in” around the edges and small crevices, then use a roller to fill in the larger areas.
7. Allow to dry for 1 hour.
8. Once the primer is dry, apply paint of your choice using the same application process at the primer.
9. Remove the painter’s tape before your paint is fully dry.
You Will Need:
• Dust mask
• Pole sander with sandpaper, 60-80 grit
• Extension pole for prep and painting, 3’-7′
• Step ladder for hard-to-reach areas
• Rags to wipe dirty and dusty surfaces
• Painter’s tape
• Drop cloths, canvas, or other reusable material
• Plastic sheets, for protecting furniture
• Spackle and applicator
• Paint roller, brush, and paint tray
• Paint of choice
• KILZ RESTORATION® Interior Primer

Our Favorite Projects of 2022
November 17, 2022The end of the year is right around the corner, which means it’s time to look back on some of our biggest accomplishments of 2022. What better way to recap the last 12 months than to revisit some of your favorite projects? From kitchens to bathrooms to living spaces, 2022 did not disappoint. When it came to updating, revamping, and overhauling, the year was full of inspiring home makeovers, so let’s recap some of our biggest standouts, and get excited to tackle another year of home improvement.
1. How to Prime Kitchen Cabinets for Color That Pops
You may remember this gorgeous kitchen update from earlier in the year. This project featured three different kitchen inspirations, all using KILZ 3®PREMIUM Interior and Exterior Primer, which came to life thanks to varied design concepts and paint combos that gave the original space some much needed personality. Two toned kitchen cabinets were a theme for this project, and using subtle, yet distinct colors that played off one another, we achieved a polished effect that would make any pro proud. See the full project.
2. Pro Spotlight: Angela Cacace Creates a Spacious and Fresh Feeling Bathroom
This outdated bathroom was in desperate need of a makeover, and pro designer and contractor, Angela Cacace, took everything from budget to aesthetic to difficulty into consideration. She used KILZ® Mold and Mildew Resistant Primer to start, and then finished the room using light and airy paint selections from the Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® collection to make the bathroom feel fresh, bright, and spacious. Achieving the creamy and neutral result was no small feat considering the hot pink “before” color of the walls and the heavy black cabinets. Primer was an absolute must for this project, and the true star of the show. See the full project.
3. Restoration vs. Original – What’s the Difference?
For this article, we talked to John Golamco, Project Manager and Primer Category lead with the KILZ® brand. His 25 years of experience gave him critical insight into this category. He explained the fundamental differences between the primers and compared them in more detail. According to John, KILZ® Original is an oil-based primer that works great for blocking severe stains and odors. It also has a more pungent solvent odor and requires mineral spirits or paint thinner to clean up. KILZ Restoration® on the other hand is a water-based primer that also blocks severe stains and odors but has lower VOCs and meets all national regulations. It’s a low-odor primer and can be cleaned up easily using soap and water. See the full article.
4. PRO SPOTLIGHT: Make A Front Door Pop with Jared Foster
We know a thing or two about details, which is exactly what we wanted to highlight with this front door refresh. Carpenter, Jared Foster, sought to complement the already calm vibe of his front porch with an equally relaxed color scheme, and he walked us through his process in bringing it to life. “Once I laid on the primer and allowed it to dry, I was able to spray the door and trim using BEHR® paint, remove all the paper and tape and enjoy the new look. All and all, this project was completed in 48 hours. Having used KILZ 3® PREMIUM Interior and Exterior Primer,I knew this door color would pop,” said Jared. See the full project.
5. Creating a Family Room that Brings People Together
This chic, yet cozy family room makeover was all about encouraging togetherness. Using a modern farmhouse look as inspiration, we crafted a similar feel with soft white paint, dark accents, and intentional décor. Taking the room from light to dark meant priming the walls for the best possible paint application, so we used KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer, which made the job a breeze thanks to its great adhesion and fast-drying formula. The finished room breathed new life into a familiar space and created a relaxed, yet sophisticated atmosphere, perfect for spending time with loved ones. See the full project.
This was a great year for DIY home makeovers, and even though the year is ending, we’re not slowing down. Whether you’re taking a little break or busy planning next year’s projects, we hope this inspirational list gives you the motivation you need to make your vision come to life. Thanks for spending the year with us. We can’t wait to see what new ideas you’ll bring to life in 2023.

A Home Office Designed for Focus and Productivity
April 12, 2022Working from home requires your full attention and focus, but with so many things around the house competing for your attention, it may feel impossible to tackle even the smallest items on your to-do list. Feeling overwhelmed may even be the reason you’ve put off designing a functional home office, but there’s no time like the present to get to work.
Your home office should be a dedicated workspace where you can distance yourself from distraction, confidently attend those virtual meetings, and really be productive. We hope this room makeover motivates you to finally get started creating a practical space in your home where you can go when you need to get things done.
Whether you’re renovating an old office or creating a space from scratch, it’s important to form a vision from the start. Our goal was to transform an outdated office from dark and stuffy to modern, bright, and airy, and because we knew we wanted fresh paint to help accomplish this, our first step was to find the best primer for the job. We chose KILZ Restoration® Interior Primer for a few reasons. Because we wanted to refresh a built-in shelving unit, as well as walls, we chose a multi-surface primer formulated for use on wood, drywall, plaster, brick and more. Since some older rooms can have their share of imperfections, we also love that this primer conceals tough stains and odors like a charm.
Before getting started, we prepped the room by cleaning all the surfaces we planned to prime. This is an important step, as smooth and clean surfaces ensure a perfect primer application and even better coat of paint. Sometimes old surfaces need quick sanding or scrub down, so if this applies to you, make sure everything is clean and dry before you begin priming. For rooms that may have suffered damage (smoke, fire, water, mold), you’ll need to address these problems beforehand, however, KILZ Restoration® Interior Primer is ideal for jobs of this kind thanks to its odor and stain blocking formula and thick consistency, which is great for filling in small cracks and splitting.
Because of the nature of the shelving unit in our home office, we chose to prime using both a brush for all those nooks and crannies and a roller for larger surface areas, like the walls. Once we evenly applied primer to all our surfaces, we let it dry—which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the number of coats used and humidity in the room—and then prepared to paint. We wanted to create a statement with color, which is why we chose BEHR® Caribe PPU13-01 for the shelves, and BEHR® Ultra Pure White for the walls. This paint combo makes the walls appear brighter in contrast with the vibrant teal shelves, creating a sophisticated-casual vibe that is clean and current, and primed for productivity.
There’s already great light in this room thanks to its extra-large window, but our fresh white walls reflect the sunlight and considerably helped to brighten up the room. We chose a modern, asymmetrical desk to replace the more substantial, yet outdated one, and we added a light gray rug underneath to further cheer up the space. Other inspired, minimalist touches are seen in the standing lamp and shelving décor. This clean, contemporary vibe creates an atmosphere where you are free to focus for hours on end.
We’re so pleased with how this room came together, and how beautifully our paint came to life on two different surfaces. Achieving these clean and vibrant colors with a smooth matte finish would have been a much larger task had we not made the effort to prime first. Keep this in mind the next time you’re ready to tackle a room makeover, so that your DIY project turns out just as skilled as the pros and gets you excited for the next one.

Restoration vs. Original – What’s the Difference?
February 25, 2022For the last 7 years, John Golamco has led the primer category at KILZ®. He is the Product Manager representing this category and has over 25 years of collective experience in sales and marketing. He lives in Southern California and enjoys traveling and cooking when he isn’t priming various surfaces!
Why are we comparing KILZ® Original and KILZ Restoration® Primers?
When our customers have a project that involves severe stains and/or persistent unwanted odors, they turn to KILZ primers. Two products that help solve these problems are KILZ Restoration water-based primer and KILZ Original oil-based primer. KILZ Restoration is an innovative water-based primer which provides similar performance in stain and odor blocking as the long-established oil-based KILZ Original primer. Shellac and oil-based are traditionally better known to block severe stains especially water-soluble stains.
What are the differences between KILZ Original & Restoration Primers?
KILZ Original is an oil-based primer and stain blocker which can block/seal severe stains and odors but has higher volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) which are organic chemical compounds that vaporize and enter the atmosphere. It also has a stronger solvent odor and requires mineral spirits or paint thinner to clean-up. KILZ Restoration is a water-based primer which also blocks severe stains and odors, however, has lower VOC’s which meets all national regulations. It is also a low odor primer and has easy clean-up with soap and water.
What is an oil-based primer? What are the benefits?
Oil-based primers are better at blocking or sealing stains, especially water-soluble stains. They’re also superior at blocking tannin. Oil-based primers have natural (i.e. linseed oil) and synthetic (i.e. alkyd oil) variants as their base technology. Alkyds have become popular in recent decades due to more easily sourced raw materials, lower cost and durability of the coating film.
TOP BENEFITS
1. It dries to a hard finish, making it durable against wear and weather.
2. Feels thick to apply and feels like it adheres well upon application which makes for an outstanding application experience.
3. Penetrates wood fibers well, making it ideal in sealing and protecting the wood.
4. Slower dry time compared to water-based which has some advantage in giving more open time to apply and for touch-ups.
KILZ Original interior primer for example, is a legacy product trusted by pro painters for 50 years! It delivers excellent stain blocking, odor blocking, adhesion performance, durability and is a fast-drying oil so pros can get more done in less time. KILZ Original line of oil-based primers use top quality modified alkyd resins as the base technology of their primer formulas.
What is a water-based primer? What are the benefits?
Water-based primers, also known as “latex” primers, are easier to clean (using soap and water), dry fast and have low VOC’s, making them healthier to use for you and the environment. In terms of their formulations, water-based primers, like water-based paints, use water as the solvent. Several other ingredients such as binders, pigments, fillers, and additives are then mixed in to create the final product.
TOP BENEFITS
1. Not combustible or flammable.
2. Low in odor making it ideal for use in interior spaces while oil-based needs very good ventilation.
3. The advancements in coatings technology have allowed water-based primers to dramatically improve and are beginning to perform on par with oil-based primers in terms of adhesion, stain blocking, and even odor blocking; and they have a faster dry time which saves time and money.
KILZ 2® ALL-PURPOSE, which is KILZ best-selling primer, is an acrylic polymer since it uses an acrylic plastic resin as its base ingredient – this is what makes the primer stick well to the surface and gives topcoat paint a sound, uniform surface to stick to – making it look better and last longer. KILZ RESTORATION is a new innovation in water-based primer technology which gives this product the performance of an oil-based (in severe stain blocking and odor blocking) but with the low VOC’s, low odor, easy clean-up and faster drying time that water-based provides. It’s the “best of both worlds”!
When would you choose to use an oil-based primer over a water-based primer? And vice versa?
TEAM OIL-BASED
• Choose an oil-based primer if priming over a previous oil-based paint and/or priming on fresh wood.
• Oil-based will seal the wood better and block any tannin stains that might bleed out.
• Oil-based is also ideal if blocking smoke and water stains as well as unwanted odors.
TEAM WATER-BASED
• Choose water-based if priming indoors where ventilation may be poor and in spaces sensitive to strong odors.
• Ideal choice when projects require a lower VOC level product, there is a flammability concern, and/or there is preference for clean-up without the use of harsh chemicals.
• State and local regulations might make oil-based products limited in availability or access. In such cases, water-based is a great choice.
What are the best use cases for Oil-based? For Water-based? Project examples?
Oil-Based: priming over water stains on ceiling tiles or priming over bare wood especially redwood varieties that bleed tannin/sealing wood knots would be some specific examples of best use cases for oil-based. Also ideal for blocking/sealing severe stains especially water-soluble stains that might be “activated” and bleed through if a water-based primer is used. Oil-based primers are also durable since they dry to a harder finish. KILZ Original Interior/Exterior primer for example is an excellent choice for exterior application due to its weather resistance, especially on wood surfaces.
Water-Based: priming indoor walls and cabinets in a space with limited ventilation or a project where low VOC emissions are a requirement. In both cases, do not apply too many coats of the primer. Even if the primer does not look like a finished coat, it is adequate to do the job of sealing the surface, blocking the stain (if any) and laying a good foundation coat to help the topcoat adhere (stick). It’s the paint’s job to completely cover everything and deliver the expected final color. The primer will help the paint look its best.
