Dining Room Debate: Light or Bright?
August 11, 2020Is your dream dining room serving up pops of bright color, fun fabrics and fixtures? Or perhaps neutral tones and coastal inspired textures are your preferred dining room design menu? That is the question of this post, as we look at dining rooms styles from light to bright. No matter your style, we’re pretty sure there is one you will love!
Our dining room debate arose as we started a project to refresh an adorable dining nook. We knew we wanted to take the walls from the current dirty brown shade to an airy white hue, so first it was time to prime. To cover the light brown paint color, we chose KILZ 2® All-Purpose primer. This water-based primer offers excellent adhesion and easily covers light to medium colors. After properly priming the walls (and allowing them to dry!), we top coated with KILZ Tribute® Paint in Architectural White. This sugar white shade has a cotton underdone and appears as a soft white in most light. For full step-by-step directions on covering both light and dark paint colors head over to our post Pro Tips for Painting Over a Dark or Light Wall.
The fresh white walls created a perfect blank canvas that could easily be the backdrop for a variety of color palettes. Inspired by the existing table and chairs, we started with a California Casual design style and played with neutral tones and textures. A new jute rug under the table anchored the space, while a fun basket-weave chandelier, sea-glass colored vase and ocean-inspired accessories completed the look.
Next up, it was time to turn this style on its head and go from light to bright! We brought in a bright white table and chalk-painted blue wooden chairs and an over-sized teal rug. Striped cushions and colorful brightened up the dining bench, while an array of three playful chandeliers came together to create a fun statement chandelier.
The newly primed and painted walls were the perfect backdrop for these two design styles, proving that white walls are far from boring. From bold and colorful, to sophisticated and neutral, the right white shade on your walls can open up a space to a myriad of design possibilities. Which style spoke to you?

Tips for Painting Walls and Cabinets
June 1, 2020Painting your walls or cabinets is an easy and low-cost way to update any room in your house, and most painting projects can be completed in just one weekend. Equally as important as choosing the right paint color is ensuring you prime first with the right primer. Without priming before painting, you risk poor paint adhesion and previous colors or stains seeping through and ruining your new paint color.
Using the right primer ensures that your topcoat color will appear on the walls as you expected it to. If you’re painting over a darker colored wall with a new lighter shade, KILZ 3® Premium Primer works to block previous dark paint colors from seeping through and changing the look of your new paint. When painting over a light color with a new darker hue, it’s still equally important to prime first. KILZ 2® All-Purpose primer is a great choice for light to dark color changes. And if your walls have tough or exceptionally dark stains or damage from smoke or water, KILZ® Original Primer and KILZ Restoration are both formulated to block severe stains.
Priming before painting ensures your paint color pops!
What if you’re painting cabinets, do you need to prime? If you want excellent paint adhesion and for your colors to appear in their truest hue – the answer is yes! Primer also makes your paint job durable, and that is especially important in high-traffic areas like kitchens. You often find cabinets in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms, and these areas of the home are subject to fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels that can make paint peel. For these spaces, a primer like KILZ Mold & Mildew dries with a mildew resistant primer finish that helps protect and extend the life of your paint.
When painting cabinets, priming first ensures excellent adhesion and truer color from your topcoat.
While priming before painting can seem like an extra step, it’s a vital part of the painting process!

Moody Master Bathroom Makeover
May 1, 2020For this month’s inspiration post we’re introducing a brand new KILZ® Primer that will help us transform a dated bathroom into a moody and dramatic retreat. The original bathroom’s design was living in the past, and not in a good way! An old wooden vanity and unattractive laminate flooring needed to go, but before a new vanity could be brought in, we needed to do something about those boring beige walls.
Creating a dramatic new space was the goal, so we knew a dark paint color would be used on the walls. And even though we were painting over a lighter color, priming first before painting was a crucial step. In addition to helping to ensure a truer color from our chosen topcoat, the primer used in this project offered a bathroom-essential benefit. We used the new KILZ® Mold & Mildew Primer for this bathroom makeover, as it creates a mold and mildew-resistant primer film that protects the primer film from mold and mildew growth.
This water-based primer-sealer-stainblocker is specially designed for high humidity, moisture and temperature environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, powder rooms and laundry rooms. It offers excellent adhesion to both interior and exterior surfaces and provides a sound anchor for paints.
Once the walls were properly primed with KILZ® Mold & Mildew and allowed to dry, it was time to paint. A deep emerald green was the perfect paint color for the walls and complemented the new black vanity. Brushed gold sinks, black and white tile and an oversized art deco-inspired mirror added sophistication to the space and completed the master bathroom transformation.

One Living Room Two Ways
April 1, 2020To demonstrate that a fresh coat of paint can dramatically change the vibe of a space, we took one living room and styled it in two different monochromatic looks. Both designs started with choosing the right paint color! To ensure that the colors popped, the walls were primed with KILZ 2® All-Purpose primer prior to painting. This water-based, multi-surface primer is ideal for use when changing paint colors.
If you read our recent post on 2020 Design Trends, you know that we’re loving all shades of navy blue. The moody color works great in many different room types, and it was the perfect hue to bring some cool drama into this large living room. We chose KILZ Tribute® in Ruling Royalty – a dark blue with a subtle purple undertone that appears as a true navy in most light. KILZ Tribute is a high-quality, water-based paint that provides a durable and scrubbale finish that is ideal for high traffic areas like living rooms.
Keeping the same major pieces of furniture for both looks (including the sofa, coffee table and arm chair), the paint color alone made a big difference in the feel of the space. Pillows, plants and other small décor items in a range of blue shades brought in a modern yet minimalist look, while a hint of bright orange in the artwork alluded to the next color that would transform the room.
After priming the walls with KILZ 2 All-Purpose to give us a clean slate, the walls were painted in KILZ Tribute in Bright Marigold, a cheerful marigold hue with a carrot undertone. The new bright orange wall inspired a bohemian, desert vibe for the space – calling for an abundance of accessories including vases, potted desert plants, patterned textiles and three-dimensional artwork.
By simply changing the paint color and accessories, this living room was transformed into two very different design styles – and it all started with the proper primer to make those paint colors pop!

Calming and Energizing Paint Colors
April 1, 2020Changing the color of your walls can not only make a big impact on the overall look and feel of your space, but it can also affect your mood. Color theory is at the core of most interior design education programs and speaks to how different colors have the ability to evoke feelings of happiness, calm, excitement and even hunger. This month we’re showcasing two beautiful paint color palettes, each curated to suit a specific mood.
The colors for our two palettes were chosen from KILZ Tribute® line of a paint, a premium acrylic paint with excellent hide that is durable, scrubbable and resistant to fading. With the start of the spring season signaling fresh beginnings and longer days, our first featured palette is all about bright, happy and energizing colors. Including a vibrant teal-blue, sunny orange and yellow, and a sweet-sangria red – this palette is all about happy hues that bring about a sense of vitality and energy.
True Teal is a medium blue with a yellow undertone.
Jazz Age Yellow is a bright daisy yellow with a gold undertone.
BEHR’s Midori is a green pepper with a cheery granny smith apple undertone.
Haute Red is a deep red that evokes the color of a sweet red sangria in certain light.
Bright Marigold is a tangerine with a ginger orange undertone.
Our second palette is a breath of fresh air – comprised of soft blues, subtle greens and graceful grays. These lighter hues can instantly soften a space and evoke feelings of peace and relaxation. Including slightly brighter light blues and greens, along with cool gray tones with the subtlest hints of purple or gray, this palette is instantly calming.
Pale Emerald is a light blue with a gray undertone that is reminiscent of a cool rain cloud.
Brushed Metal is a grayed light purple with a slight red undertone.
Tender Shoots is a mossy lime with a sage undertone, a perfectly relaxed green.
Alaskan Mist is a white with a blue gray undertone, like a cool cloudy day.
Resful Retreat is a light green with a yellow undertone.
It’s easy to see that color choice can have a big impact not only on how your space looks, but how it feels too. If you’re interested to try on different paint colors in different spaces (or even in your own space virtually!) check out KILZ Color Perfect™ where you can upload and virtually paint digital photos.
Truer Coverage Starts Here
March 30, 2020When you’ve finally found that perfect paint color for your walls or furniture re-painting project, the last thing you want is a pre-existing stain to seep through and ruin your new color! Even light to moderate stains like scuff marks or crayon marks can bleed through paint, so it’s important to prime first to create a barrier. If you’re dealing with a lighter stain, KILZ 2® All-Purpose primer is a great choice. A water-based formula with enhanced hiding, KILZ 2 All-Purpose is formulated to block light to medium stains and hide previous colors.
A severe stain calls for a heavy-duty primer – and we have more than one that are up for the job! KILZ® Primer is a preferred choice of pros for stains caused by fires, floods, persistent exposure to pets or smoke stains from fire damage, soot and charring. Stain blocking primers also work great on permanent marker, grease and nicotine stains. KILZ® Original, trusted by pros for over 40 years, has excellent sealing and adhesion properties and is formulated to block heavy stains. Another great choice is KILZ Restoration, a water-based primer that offers the performance of a traditional oil and shellac-based primer. A heavy stain and odor blocker, KILZ Restoration can block stains from tannin, water, fire damage, smoke, nicotine and more.
From colorful crayon stains to unsightly smoke damage, truer coverage starts with KILZ primers.

Odor Blocking Primers for Fresh as Spring Painting Projects
March 16, 2020Spring brings new beginnings and is often the perfect time to tackle a painting project you’ve been putting off. If you have a room renovation project that includes the added challenge of ridding the space of stale smells or bad odors, KILZ® Primers can help. From pet odor to the lingering smell of smoke (even long after the smoker is gone!), unpleasant odors can get stuck in your home and seem near impossible to remove.
Odor may penetrate fresh paint, so simply repainting the walls will likely leave you with a still smelly space. For a room that looks and smells as fresh spring, we recommend priming before painting. Priming provides a barrier that prevents odor from penetrating fresh paint and KILZ offers several primers with the ability to block medium to severe odors. So which primer is right for your project?
If you’re looking for a heavy-duty odor blocking primer, KILZ® Original primer is a great choice. Trusted by pros for over 40 years, it has excellent sealing properties and can block heavy odors and stains.
Working on a project outdoors? KILZ® Original Interior | Exterior primer offers the heavy-duty power of KILZ Original in an all-weather formula with excellent adhesion to both interior and exterior surfaces.
For spaces or areas that might be sensitive to solvent odors, KILZ® Original Low Odor is an interior oil-based stain and odor blocking primer that puts off less odor than typical oil-based primers.
Looking for a water-based primer? KILZ Restoration® is a new generation water-based primer, sealer and stain blocker that offers the performance of traditional oil and shellac-based primers. It tackles tough stains and seals persistent pet, food and smoke odors. It can also be used to block odors from subfloor when replacing carpet or wood flooring.
If your next painting project includes tackling lingering odors, you can breathe easy knowing that KILZ primers can help you get the job done.

Fresh as Spring Laundry Room Makeover
March 6, 2020A fresh coat of primer and paint brings a welcome sense of calm to a room often reserved only for chores in this fresh as spring laundry room makeover. Laundry is virtually unavoidable, so you might as well enjoy the space you’re in when you’re checking it off the to-do list!
The laundry room’s original wood cabinets felt like an endless line up of bland and boring, lacking both color and any interesting detail. A fresh coat of paint was definitely in order, but first things first… we couldn’t forget to prime! Similar to bathrooms and kitchens, laundry rooms are an area of the house often prone to excess moisture, humidity and changing temperatures – making primer an essential first step to ensure a paint finish that will last.
For this laundry room transformation, we chose KILZ 3® Premium primer as it offers exceptional adhesion and durability, and a mildew resistant primer finish. After KILZ 3 Premium primer was properly applied and allowed to dry, we had a clean slate ready for color.
For a relaxed yet modern vibe we chose KILZ Tribute® in Panoramic Trail TB-65, a minty green with an ever so slight gray undertone. Gold hardware added a subtle shine and much needed detail to the otherwise flat cabinet fronts, inspiring the addition of a new gold faucet and metallic pendant lights to tie the space together.
The original laundry room was also lacking surface area to fold after the fluffing is done, with the sink taking up an entire side of the already limited counter space. The fix was both functional and uniquely attractive! Adding a dark wooden panel around the top and sides of the washing machine and dryer not only brought warmth to the space, it also nearly tripled the usable countertop area.
A new faux-wood floor in a subtle grey shade was added to perfectly complement the new cabinet color. The final space is so pretty, it almost makes us want to do laundry!
